![]() Identifying when to Boost may just be the key to victory. Each turn, build up BP that can be spent to dramatically increase your strength or provide aid. Combat revolves around the Boost system, a fusion of traditional turn-based battling and modern enhancements. The warrior can "challenge" people to a duel, whereas the dancer can "allure" others to follow her, even into battle! Enjoy the freedom to choose your own path while experiencing the story through the role you play. Each traveler can use a distinct Path Action, a specialized way of achieving objectives and interacting with people you encounter. Where to begin? Who to team up with? Where to go next? Only you can decide. Embark on a vast new role-playing adventure as one of eight travelers, all with their own origins, paths, and goals. The producers of the Bravely series at Square Enix have brought a new world to life through a mix of CG, pixel art, and "HD-2D" visuals. Summary: Embark on a vast new role-playing adventure as one of eight travelers, all with their own origins, paths, and goals. Both games have lovely music to accompany the travel. I love exploring these areas and completing side objectives. If not for the Titan exploration, I'd have dropped the game in the early hours. Xenoblade excels with massively stunning vistas, secret locations, scope. Basic corridor dungeon mazes with forks featuring treasure or exits. The vignettes can be interesting for some heroes, but its paced very sluggishly and some hero stories may be a turn-off to sit through(Of the 8 heroes, half of them were snooze-worthy I found). Octopath felt like it goes nowhere very slowly. You will know if this stuff bothers you or not, but its all here(I am starting to groan at XB2 as I near the finale). Abject lessons in friendship throughout as stubborn heroes are too blind and naive to understand anything that doesn't physically wollop them in the face. Octopath did put up stronger duels against bosses however, whereas Xenoblade just kind of sputters and rarely excites unless you play around with its difficulty sliders(Expansion pass only?).īoth games feature tropey and somewhat trite storylines(well of what I have seen of each), with Xenoblade going full on anime melodrama. Both games feature combat that drags to its conclusion performing relatively rote tactics that rarely feel like you are outwitting your opponents and more like you are just trying to eke out the most efficient path to victory due to bloated enemy health and lacking enemy AI. I quit Octopath ~15 hours in and have never looked back.īoth games have flaws, largely the combat mechanics are setup for some interesting skill use and variation, but not well executed in either case. Not full blown after credits content.Ĭurrently playing Xenoblade 2 and well over 100 hours in(much of that time is poking around doing optional stuff though). ![]() It's more akin to the last challenges in like FF7 or FF8. Octopath doesn't have a particularly great post game. I played just under 100 hours of Octopath. The graphics are splendid and the OST here is also phenomenal. The combat system is one of the best turn based systems ever imo. It's super open ended and the fact it lets you tackle the world however you want is super refreshing. The chapter structure in the games are largely identical bar 2-3 chapters of 40 (and those are great chapters granted) so it can feel repetitive but it personally didn't bother me. In addition when you complete a character path it opens up more quests that help expand the games lore and flesh out secondary characters. It doesn't tell any wildly interesting stories though I think as short min stories they work well enough and the characters are largely likeable. Octopath is a traditional JRPG with an interesting structure. It has an insane amount of content and the season pass is an amazing value. It has a fun world to explore but the mechanics are really bone headed at times and it is poorly streamlined. To get the most out of the game you have to be willing to play all the characters instead of just Rex. But it's charming in a way too, (well the big tits aren't but the banter is) The combat system is obtuse as fuck but if you take the time to learn it it feels fucking great. That said, this shit is like, you are gonna roll your eyes at all the big tits and dumb lines and often times stupid character comments. Xenoblade is like a really shitty shonen anime with a surprisingly likeable cast of characters. or Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate :P
